Do you want to learn how to make your own homemade candles? Well, you’ll like to know that with the oil you normally use to cook or fry, you can reuse it to make these candles and get an intimate and cozy touch to any room in your home without paying too much. For this, you will have to have used oil that will allow us to reuse it and give it a new use, in this case, create some homemade candles that will aromatize with essential oils to enhance a delicious aroma.
You will need to:
- 4 small crystal glasses (like yogurt jars, for example)
- 400 grams of recycled oil
- 85 grams of low melting soy wax
- 5 mm of cotton thread (to make the candle wick)
- 15 drops of essential oil (the one you like the most!)
Steps to follow:
1.To be able to make homemade candles with recycled oil we have to have an oil that has rested for a few hours, that is, we will not be able to immediately use the one with which we have just finished cooking because it will be full of residues that can make our craft difficult. Therefore, we will have to let the oil rest for about 5 or 6 hours so that the leftover elements make a deposit in the lower part.
When this time has passed and the waste is down, we will have to strain the oil to remove the dirt. We do not want pieces of food or fat, we just want to reuse the oil from the meals.
2.Next we will prepare the wick of the homemade candle. To do so we will just have to take the thread and cut it to an optimal size considering that it has to project slightly from the glass that we have chosen to make the candle.
The next step will be to melt the soy wax;we can do it in the microwave or in the bain-marie, as we prefer. As soon as it is in a liquid state it will be when we put the thread just to wet it and get, so, that it is covered with wax. This step is essential so that after it can start properly, you have to wet it as if it were a churro dipped in chocolate.
3.Then we will have to pour the wax (still liquid) in the oil. You will see that, when both ingredients come into contact, the wax solidifies very quickly, for this reason, we will have to heat again in the microwave or in the water bath so that they have the same temperature.
As soon as it is ready, you will have to mix the ingredients and, then, pour the mixture into the glass glasses that will serve as candle holders. Add now, also, the essential oil that we like the most so that, when we light the wick, the aroma permeates our home.
4.To make homemade candles with recycled oil, we will now have to let the mixture cool slightly and, when it begins to solidify, we will put the wick inside so that it can be properly fixed. In the case that it is too solid and you cannot put the wick, we recommend that you help with a wire to make the necessary space and introduce the wick.
Be careful that the wick does not fall and stick to the rest of the mixture because, then, you will be left without a candle. If you see that it cannot be straight you can help hold it up by placing two objects that press it and keep it straight.
5.Now, we will have to let it rest for a couple of hours until the homemade candles with oil are completely solidified. Then, you can cut the wick that you over and ready! Now you just have to light the wick and enjoy the aroma that you have chosen.
6. If you want to add a more decorative touch to your homemade candle, we recommend that you decorate the crystal glasses and give them a personal and unique touch. For example, you can paint the glass with the colors that you like so that it is not a typical crystal glass. You can also cover it with esparto rope circling from the base of the glass to obtain a decorative and very vintage object.
Another good idea is to paste decorative elements such as, for example, scallop shells that will give a marine touch and aesthetically very nice. You can, also, stick dry branches and get a rustic and perfect candle to beautify any environment.
